Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is often associated with childhood, but nearly half of new diagnoses in the United States occur in adults age 18 and older. For many, the diagnosis comes unexpectedly. Early screening, however, can identify T1D years before symptoms develop.

Jewish populations have been found to have a somewhat higher prevalence of certain genetic markers associated with autoimmune conditions, including T1D. For the Kansas City Jewish community, local organizations are hoping increased awareness can help families recognize the importance of early detection.

Breakthrough T1D will present “Protecting Our Families: Understanding and Detecting Type 1 Diabetes Early” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Oct. 25. The program will include local families sharing their stories, a community panel with healthcare professionals, and on-site early detection for those who qualify.

This program is free and open to the community. Kosher and celiac-friendly refreshments will be served, with carb counts displayed.
